the original Linnean specimen; as it
can be easily seen, the holotype of the species from the
Linnean collection resembles a lot Salvia nemorosa ssp. tesquicola from
the steppe and forest-steppe areas west and north of the Black
Sea. This is not a surprise since Linne got its specimen
from Traugott Gerber who collected a lot of other plants for
him from the steppes north from the Black Sea; so seemingly
what is today called Salvia nemorosa ssp.
tesquicola is in fact the type of Salvia nemorosa.

This subspecies differs from the typical
Salvia nemorosa L. only by having long hairy
stems. It is the counterpart of the species from the much arid
Pontic areas - though a good example of adaptation, and
evolution.
